Page Margins
A guide to depth in the age of fragmented attention
The first page ritual
Do not start reading unless you have at least 20 minutes of guaranteed silence. Turn off your phone or leave it in another room. The Page Margins section begins with an act of separation.
The analog notebook
Read with a pen in hand. Underline not what is important, but what resonates within you. Write your doubts, your angers, your joys in the margins. Turn the book into a dialogue.
The single paragraph exercise
Choose a particularly dense paragraph. Read it three times. The first to understand what it says. The second to understand how it says it. The third to let it settle without trying to understand anything.
The landscape pause
Every 10 pages, close the book. Look out the window. Do not think about what you have read. Let your brain make its invisible connections while you observe the real world.
The algorithmic contrast
After reading a difficult chapter, try asking an AI to summarize it. Notice what is missing from the summary: your emotion will be missing, your personal memory associated with a word, the weight of silence between the lines. That void is your humanity.
Rereading as fidelity
Books that matter are not just read, they are reread. Choose a book that changed your life five years ago. Read it again now. You will see that the book has remained the same, but you have become a different reader.
